Claimants who have been approved to receive
title II disability benefits (also known as SSD, SSDI, RSDI,
and, in plain english, social security disability) are subject
to a five month waiting
period
The five month waiting period simply means
that SSA, or the social security administration, will withhold
five months of an approved claimant's benefits.
To illustrate, a claimant who has been awarded benefits
with an onset date of March 1 will only be eligible to receive
benefits as of August 1.
Exactly why the Social Security Administration has chosen
in its policy making to withhold a sizeable percentage of
claimant's rightful past due benefits (backpay) is something
of a mystery.
*Note:
SSI claimants who have been approved to receive disability
benefits are not
subject to the five month waiting period.
